Speak out against the Klan cross on Fountain Square

Cincinnati-On December 2, the Ku Klux Klan erected their cross on Fountain Square downtown.

Many have said that we should just ignore the Klan. But others feel strongly that it is every citizen's duty to non-violently, but openly, speak out against hatred and ignorance when it is present in our community.

STONEWALL

CINCINNATI

Those of us who are gay, lesbian, bisexual

or

transgender are familiar with this phrase "Silence Death." If we believe in toler-

--

ance, social justice and racial equality we must reject silence.

Former Councilmember Tyrone Yates said it well at a 1998 Flashlight Vigil held in opposition to the KKK cross when he said, "We must fight evil with the full force of our truth in action,"

As the Klan spread their hate on December 2, there were encouraging examples of "truth in action." Members and supporters of the Intercommunity Justice and Peace Center silently prayed for an end to hatred and intolerance in our city. This group will continue their prayer vigils as long as the Klan cross is standing. To find out more about this effort, call them at 513-579-8547.

"Operation Blackout," sponsored by the Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, is aimed at promoting a spirit of unity. They ask that people of good will make a taxdeductible contribution to the commission's Freedom Fund. Contributions will be used

to build the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Organizers said, "For every minute the KKK cross stands, dollars will be donated to this worthwhile cause."

Donate directly at any Fifth Third bank, or mail to CHRC Freedom Fund, c/o Cincinnati Human Relations Commission, Room 110 City Hall, 801 Plum Street Cincinnati, Ohio 45202. For more information, call 513-352-3237.

In stark contrast to the Klan's ugly, rusty cross of hate, the "That We May All Be One" cross, also erected on Fountain Square, celebrates the worth, dignity and gifts of every person. Sponsored by the United Church Assembly of Greater Cincinnati, Immanuel United Church of Christ and Clifton United Methodist Church, this cross is decorated with photographs of people of many ages, races and ethnicities.

"We suggest that people of all faith per-

spectives have a silent show of their philosophy by placing a flower or other symbol of their faith at the "That We May All Be One" display," organizers said. As of this afternoon, many flowers and symbols had already been placed at the base of this cross.

Take a moment this holiday season to oppose the Klan's attempts to divide this community, and affirm our true community values by supporting one or all of these worthwhile efforts.

Board will look at town meeting results

Columbus-With the holiday season now upon us, it seems a perfect time to reflect upon not only where we've been, but more importantly where we're going. This is a particularly exciting time to be involved with the Lesbian Business Association, as we have many projects and plans under way.

Elections for board member seats are currently in progress. Those who are currently members of the LBA should be receiving their ballots by mail within the next couple of weeks. If you are not currently a member of the LBA and would like to take part in the voting of board members, we encourage you to call us.

All women are welcome and eligible for any board seat. Becoming a member, voting on board seats, or even running for a seat yourself allows your voice to be heard. As we've all seen, every vote really does count. Your participation in the organization makes

a difference in what direction we will take in the future and what we will accomplish. We have many new and talented womyn who are running for board seats and will bring new energy and ideas to the organization.

One of the very first items the board must address after the New Year is the results of our Town Meeting, which we held this past September. A great deal of information and feedback was obtained from this meeting. The board will be responsible for ensuring this information gets put into action and that goals are accomplished. We will I have more information on this for you after the new board members meet.

19 West Brighton Rd. in Clintonville. We have had some fantastic pot luck dinners, slide shows, live musical performances, and educational programs just to name a few.

Currently we are lining up events for the upcoming months. Some events in the works are "Ask-a-Doc" with Shelley Blackburn, M.D.; "Auto Care 101" with Chris Cozad; OSU women's basketball games; and a coffee house gathering just

The LBA's sponsorship of Grrlz Nite Out has been quite successful so far. The idea behind the Nite Out is to offer different ways for women to meet, gather and have fun as an alternative to the bar scene.

Grrlz Nite Out meets every third Friday of the month, usually at the LBA clubhouse,

Community Groups

The "Community Groups" columns on this page are published by the Gay People's Chronicle free of charge, as a public service. They are written by members or officers of each non-profit organization, reflecting the views of Their group.

to name a few. Any women who would like to facilitate an event or educational program is invited to give us a call. All womyn are welcome and encouraged to attend. "Grrlz Nite" is a great way to meet new friends in a safe, women-only environment. Another goal we're working on is making our clubhouse a little more comfy and cozy. So since this is the time of year for wish lists, we've realized there are a few things we could use for our LBA office (aka the clubhouse). We are in need of a working refrigerator, women's artwork, a couch, armchairs, and carpeting just to name a few. If you have any such items you would like to donate please give us a call.

As you can see there's lots going on at the LBA, and this is only the beginning. We wish to extend our thanks and gratitude to those who continually offer support to the LBA. Without your support we could not continue to be one of the only area organizations to focus solely on the women's community. If you would like to get in touch or have any further questions about what's happening at the LBA, please give us a call at 614-267-3953, we'd love to hear from you.
